Anyone can Blog:  Top Reasons why People Blog

by Carolyn Wright

Blog Web sites

A blog, short for Weblog, uses a regularly updated journal format to reflect the interests, opinions, and personality of the author and sometimes of site visitors.  It is a place to express yourself to the world. It is a place to share your thoughts and your passions. Really, it’s anything you want it to be.   In short, a blog is your own website that you are going to update on an ongoing basis.

People took the words Web Logs and shortened it to Blogs—online diaries, journals, or editorials.  Blogs are everywhere onA the Internet. A person used to be outdated if he/she did not have a website, now having a blog is strictly required.  A blog owner will log-on daily, weekly, or whenever, and write about whatever is going on in their lives or business, or they may comment on politics and news. How wonderful the Internet is! Now anyone who can afford a blog can be self published and allow their thoughts to be read by anyone in the world who has online access. How important is blogging to you or the small business person?

One who participates in the activities of maintaining a blog is known as a blogger and the activity of keeping a blog is known as blogging.

Who Blogs?

Anyone can blog.  It can be people just like you and me and it includes people of all ages and background.  Although, once the haven of technical know-it-alls, blogging has suddenly caught-on as a legitimate hobby and has entered the mainstream. Every day millions of people, some of whom have no technical ability whatsoever, write on their blogs.

To meet this demand some amazing tools have been created that will allow anyone, even people with very little knowledge of computers, to have their own blog. If you can find your way onto the Internet and follow some basic instructions you can have your own blog. It’s just that easy.

According to the Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary & Thesaurus, walk of life refers to different types of jobs and different levels of society:

Members of the gym include lawyers, teachers,
plumbers, and hairdressers – people from all
            (different) walks of life.

Why Do People Blog?

Blogs are online journals that can be used in a variety of different ways. In a personal sense, families can keep track of each other across the globe by posting to a family blog. One family member posts, then another member adds their comment underneath the post, and so forth.

Businesses can announce new products and services, discounts, discontinued items, or holiday promotions in their blogs.

Every individual has a different purpose for writing a blog.

There are different types of blogs people are using.

  • Personal blog:
People are using their blog for personal use like a personal dairy.

  • Company blog:
They are promoting their services and product through blog.

  • Tutorial blog:
This type of blog is only for sharing purpose, therefore people are sharing information,
tips,  guides, and their experience through this type of blog.

There are many purposes and reason for writing a blog such as:

  • To Express Your Thoughts and Opinions

  • To Market or Promote Something

  • To Help People

  • To Establish Yourself as an Expert

  • To Connect with People Like You

  • To Make a Difference

  • To Stay Active or Knowledgeable in a Field or Topic

  • To Stay Connected with Friends and Family

  • To Make Money

  • To Have Fun and Be Creative

Because of the internet, bloggers have the opportunity of reaching hundreds or even thousands of people each and every day.

Stop wasting time and start a successful blog today.

Blogging Again!

Today, June 11, 2016 I decided that I would look at the concept of blogging again to get reacquainted with the concept of blogging.  This time, my purpose for blogging would be blogging for my business.    My focus today has been on Branding my Business.  I learned that Branding involves more than the logo and colors.  It is much, much, more. There is a quote that contends that " Life is a life long journey...," so stick with me on my learning journey.  I am glad that I had something to post today.

CBWright's Ideas on Integrating Technology

Integrating Technology into U.S. History I Curriculum
The American Revolution
(1754-1783)

My thoughts...

After completing chapter 4 in The American Vision on the American Revolution, Mrs. Wright would like for her students to present the material they have covered during the past week in some kind of presentation involving all class members.  After reviewing the social studies, and technology standards, she decided to introduce the class to a class Wiki.  By doing this, Mrs. Wright hopes to engage students in a new collaborative effort, have them review information they learned during the American Revolution chapter, develop some new technology skills, and engage in some critical thinking along the way.

By completing the American Revolution in class, creating the class wiki, learning to add pictures, photos, or sound or movie, students in this class will have completed work involving the following standards:

Social Studies Standard 3:  Trace the chronology of events leading to the American Revolution, including the French and Indian War, the Stamp Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Intolerable Acts, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the publication of Common Sense, and the Declaration of Independence.

AHSGE:  I-1D, III-1A

Technology (as defined by our school system’s Technology Standards)…

Using these standards as guidelines, my 10th grade class will be divided into groups and assigned a particular task within the class wiki on the American Revolution.  They will learn how to create the wiki with the classroom teacher.  They will also be assigned additional tasks for the wiki including sound, clipart, and/or photography.

In addition to the class wiki, the same information groups could also be engaged in the creation of an American Revolution Newspaper.  Students will use their knowledge of the American Revolution and technology skills for their creations and will share their final projects with the other 10th and 11th grade classes in the building.

By collaboratively creating the class wiki on the American Revolution, the entire class will have the chance to be actively involved, both individually and as a group.  The requirements will include creating both new pages and editing the work of others in the class, thus giving students the chance to experience the collaborative nature of a wiki and test their editing skills at the same time.

Incorporating the use of technology into the 10th grade curriculum is a natural collaboration of need and interest.  Engaging students in history is not an easy task and technology tools can spark their interest.  Completing a technology project within the curriculum engages several of the intelligences, including Linguistic Intelligence, Spatial Intelligence, and Interpersonal Intelligence.

Instead of focusing on making a wiki or creating a webpage, the experience will actively engage the learners throughout the process, focusing on their strengths.

Wikispaces has the potential to support and structure communities where individuals come together to share, learn, and create and collaborate with each other.  The diverse communities that can form through wikis can be a source of creativeness and inventiveness.  Recognizing contributors as individuals with unique experience as members of a group allows for a personalized learning experience while also learning as part of a community.

While recognizing the advantages of integrating technology into the curriculum in relation to the multiple intelligences, the community of learners, the collaborative efforts, and the creative opportunities, one must not forget one other very basic reason—the fun of the project!  Given the choice of writing a several page paper on an aspect of the American Revolution or working collaboratively on a class wiki space then linking to a class webpage for addition information, which option do you think they would choose?

Creating a new learning community in a 10th grade class opens up endless possibilities.  Using wikis, blogs, WebPages, and more offers classroom teachers and students creative possibilities to incorporate curriculum content with new learning environments.  By starting small and thinking big, students and teachers will be amazed at the end results.

Before all of this is put into motion I would know to get a parental form for the parents to fill out and also I would know to educate students about digital citizenship, etiquette, etc.

Blogs can be used to connect with your students in a personal manner, giving you greater insight to their lives and letting them learn about you as well. Blogs can be multi-functional ranging from journals, assignments, reflections, thoughts, experiences, homework, publication of student work, uploading articles so students can react to them etc.  Blogs can be used for many purposes.  Therefore, we will be incorporating blogs and wikis into our assignments.  The purpose of this blog is to learn to blog and it is in the form of an assignment.
